Where these figures come from
About these figures: the numbers below come from SSS's official published sources: Social Security System | Unemployment Benefit (https://www.sss.gov.ph/unemployment-benefit/, retrieved 2026-08-31); Social Security System | Citizen's Charter 2026 (1st Edition, External Services) (https://www.sss.gov.ph/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/2026-SSS-Citizens-Charter-1st-Edition-External-Services.pdf, retrieved 2026-08-31). Agencies change fees and rates without notice, so confirm with SSS before you rely on them. Last verified: 2026-08-31.
The unemployment benefit is the SSS benefit with the strictest entry test and the shortest filing window. This page sets out both, and is direct about the one number SSS does not publish.
SSS does not publish the peso amount of this benefit on its unemployment page or in the Citizen’s Charter service read for this guide. No figure is stated here.

| Contributions | At least 36 monthly contributions |

Which separations qualify
| Basis | Cause |
|---|---|
| Article 298 (283) | Installation of labor-saving devices |
| Article 298 (283) | Redundancy |
| Article 298 (283) | Retrenchment or downsizing |
| Article 298 (283) | Closure or cessation of operation |
| Article 299 (284) | Disease or illness whose continued employment is prohibited by law or prejudicial to the employee’s or a co-employee’s health |
| Article 300 (285) | Serious insult by the employer or their representative on the honour and person of the employee |
| Article 300 (285) | Inhuman and unbearable treatment |
| Article 300 (285) | Commission of a crime or offence by the employer against the employee or an immediate family member |
| Article 300 (285) | Other analogous causes |
| Other | Economic downturn |
| Other | Natural or human-induced calamities and disasters |
| Other | Other analogous cases as determined by DOLE and SSS |
For a resignation under Article 300 (285), the employee must support the ground with substantial evidence as required by DOLE and SSS.
Which do not
Subject to the employer complying with substantive and procedural due process under DOLE Department Order No. 147, series of 2015, an employee separated for a just cause under Article 297 (282) does not qualify:
- serious misconduct
- willful disobedience or insubordination
- gross and habitual neglect of duties
- fraud or willful breach of trust
- commission of a crime or offence
- analogous cases such as abandonment, gross inefficiency, disloyalty, conflict of interest or dishonesty
For OFWs, the reasons for involuntary separation are determined by DOLE through the POEA. The OEC guide and the Balik-Manggagawa OEC guide cover the deployment documents that sit around an OFW’s employment record.
The edge cases SSS spells out
| Situation | How SSS treats it |
|---|---|
| Floating status, not yet technically terminated, waiting for operations to resume | Not involuntarily separated |
| Employment contract expires without recall | Involuntarily separated, with the date of floating status as the separation date |
| Employer-employee relationship suspended, and after an extension of another 6 months the employer cannot recall due to serious economic downturn | Involuntarily separated, with the date of suspension as the separation date |
| Pending illegal termination case, no Notice of Termination obtainable | DOLE requires a Certificate of Pending Case as additional proof |
| Closure or cessation | Applies where all branches of the employer have ceased operations |
The two clocks
| Clock | Rule |
|---|---|
| Filing deadline | Within 1 year from the date of involuntary separation |
| Frequency limit | Once every 3 years, starting from the date of involuntary separation |
| Concurrent contingencies | Where two or more compensable contingencies fall in the same compensable period, only the highest benefit is paid |
| Published processing | 3 working days, at no fee |
There is a legacy rule on the record: claims whose 1-year deadline fell between 05 March 2020 and the last day of the community quarantine were not denied, and could still be filed within 60 days from the end of the quarantine.
When SSS takes it back
The amount of a settled unemployment benefit is deducted, partially or in full, from future benefits where:
| # | Trigger |
|---|---|
| 1 | There are overlapping benefits |
| 2 | A case you filed against the employer resolves showing substantive and procedural due process was complied with under a just cause |
| 3 | The case results in reinstatement with backwages |
| 4 | You are rehired or re-employed within the compensable period, or within 2 months from the date of involuntary separation |
Claims suspected of misrepresentation, fraud or falsification are referred to the SSS Special Investigation Department. A confirmed false claim means SSS demands immediate return of the full settled amount, deducts it from future benefits on failure to return it, and holds the member and any person involved liable under Section 28 of RA 11199.

The contributions behind the test
The 36 contributions are the same ones on the standard schedule.
| Figure | |
|---|---|
| Contribution rate | 15% of the Monthly Salary Credit |
| MSC floor | ₱5,000 |
| MSC ceiling | ₱35,000 |
| Benefits computed only up to | ₱20,000 |
| Monthly contribution range | ₱760.00 to ₱5,280.00 |
The SSS contribution table has all 61 MSC rows, and the pay contribution guide the payment channels.
A note on this page’s template. It was planned as a fee-and-requirements guide. Because SSS does not publish the benefit amount, it is written as a requirements-and-process guide instead, as this site’s rules prescribe when the money figure is not genuinely published.
What this page does not cover
SSS does not publish, on the pages read for this guide, the peso amount or the formula for the unemployment benefit, the number of months it covers, the appeal route for a denied claim, or the DOLE certification process in full. None of those are stated here.

Frequently asked questions
- How much is the SSS unemployment benefit?
