A lost passport at €175.00 all-in is close to 3 times a renewal. A mutilated one at €85.00 is under half that, so a damaged passport you still hold is far cheaper than one you cannot produce.

The DFA fixes the dollar-to-euro conversion at parity for consular collections, whatever the market rate is doing. That is why the euro figures are round numbers and why they do not move when the currency does.

Rome is the strictest of the posts covered on this site. London is card or contactless only, the exact opposite, and Kuwait takes KNET or cash in local currency. Turning up with the wrong payment method is a wasted trip at every one of them.

Read those last two rows again: someone travelling in from outside Rome is served faster than a Rome resident, who must additionally show proof of urgency. That is what the Embassy publishes, and it is the reverse of what most people would assume.

- Not for a passport. Expedited processing is available exclusively for notarization, certification and visa services. Passports are not on that list.
- What is the cut-off for expedited services?
- Applications must be filed before 11:30 AM. Residents outside Rome get same-day release between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM; residents of Rome with proof of urgency get the next working day, in the same window.
- Why is the exchange rate 1:1?
- The DFA sets it. Per CIR-1592-OUA-2024 dated 12 July 2024 the collection rate is US$ 1.00 = EUR 1.00, regardless of the market rate, effective 1 September 2024 per ML-130-OUA-2024.
- Does this cover Milan too?
- The schedule is published as covering all Eurozone posts, so the fees apply beyond Rome. Confirm hours and payment rules with your own post, since those are set locally.
